چکیده

Trade-o s between code selection, register allocation, and instruction scheduling are inherently interdependent, especially when compiling for ne-grain parallel architectures. However, the conventional approach to compiling for such machines arbitrarily separates these phases so that decisions made during any one phase place unnecessary constraints on the remaining phases. Mutation Scheduling attempts to solve this problem by combining code selection, register allocation, and instruction scheduling into a uni ed framework in which trade-o s between the functional, register, and memory bandwidth resources of the target architecture are made \on the y" in response to changing resource constraints and availability.

Filaments: Efficient Support for Fine-Grain Parallelism

It has long been thought that coarse-grain parallelism is much more efficient than fine-grain parallelism due to the overhead of process (thread) creation, context switching, and synchronization. On the other hand, there are several advantages to fine-grain parallelism: architecture independence, ease of programming, ease of use as a target for code generation, and load-balancing potential. Thi...

Balancing Fine- and Medium-Grained Parallelism in Scheduling Loops for the XIMD Architecture

This paper presents an approach to scheduling loops that leverages the distinctive architectural features of the XIMD, particularly the variable number of instruction streams and low synchronization cost. The classical VLIW and MIMD architectures have a fixed number of instruction streams, each with a fixed width. A compiler for the XIMD architecture can exploit fine-grained parallelism within ...

URSA: A Unified ReSource Allocator for Registers and Functional Units in VLIW Architectures

The division of instruction scheduling and register allocation and assignment into separate phases can adversely affect the performance of these tasks and thus the quality of the code generated for load/store fine grained parallel architectures. Improved performance in one phase can deteriorate the performance of the other phase, possibly resulting in poorer overall performance. In this paper w...
